Little Lion Man - Music Video - Evaluation

This is my Evaluation for my music video for the song Little Lion MAn

For this project we were asked to make a music video of a song of our choice we had to do the pre production, production and the post production for the video, i was in a group of 3, it was me, Sam Goodfellow and Karenza Wheatley. We first though of three songs. These 3 were I Predict A Riot by The Kaiser Chiefs, Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol and Little Lion Man by Mumford and songs. In the end we chose Little Lion Man because we thought we could make a good video that related to the lyrics of the songs. The lyrics are about regret and mistakes so i video took on this theme.
In the production of the video i was one of the actors who played the main boy in the video, Sam was the director and Karenza was the camera operator and a actor. Although throughout the production we got to have ago on the camera and all our ideas were took on board by the director ( Sam ). My Responsibilities were to perform what the director wanted and also to follow the stage directions on the script, i also had to make sure i was dressed in the right cloths which were on the call sheet.

The first thing we had to do before any filming was to do the pre production work for our video, we had to do a storyboard, proposal, treatment, call sheet, shoot list, risk assent, actors contract, script and reece checklist. This is all to plan for the production and to know what your doing and when for when you come to filming the video. We each did different things for the pre production by all had input on all the paperwork. We made a Schedule to know what each of us are doing and to know when we had to do it by, this way we would get finished in time.

When we had got all the paper work finished for the pre production we were ready to start filming, we filmed on a weekend in 2 locations, The woods and the directors house, due to the call sheet we knew where we had to be and what time. In the morning of the shoot before we starting shooting we looked around our location to find the best spot to film due to where the sun was, These are some picture of trying to find a good shot, we took pictures so we knew what it looked like through a lens before we started filming.

It took us a whole day to film our video and then we could start the post production. We all had input in the post production taking turns to edit different parts of the video. One of the things i think we done really well was the flashbacks. During our video there are lots of flashbacks of the boys life, to show this was a flashback we would have a fade in to the clips and also change the lighting of the clips, below is 2 images one of the normal clip and the other a edit version to make it look like a flashback.

I think one thing we done well was work as a team and were organised, we all knew when to be on set and what time and what to wear and to act ect .. We all took each others ideas in and everyones full input went into this project, everyones ideas were took on board by the director and we filmed several scene but differently because we tried ever ones ideas out even if it didn't work in the end. If we didn't work as a team and weren't organised then we would not of known what we were doing and it would of been one persons work instead of a combined effort. Due to the sun in one scene we had to change the shot but we used this as a strength because we filmed from lots of different angels so we had a number of angels and options to put into the final video. Another strength we had was we all had experience before in filming videos, Karenza has filmed some of her own music videos for youtube, and myself and Sam both did  GCSE media studies and also have made short films for youtube we altogether gave us quit a bit of experience when it come to shooting our video. Another strength we had was a bit of editing we come up with, after the first chorus of the song there is a fast instrumental bit, during this part of the song we thought it would be good if the visuals linked in with the audio so we put together a section where we had really fast cuts showing different parts of the boys life. This worked as it went with the music whereas if you had a clip with no cuts it would of felts slow with the music, another bit of editing we done well is where there is a scene of the boy and the girl next to the tree then the camera goes round the tree to show the boy just imagining it, to show this we used lighting again making the flashback lighter and making the present day darker. Below is some images to prove the everyone had ago at filming some scenes.

Now here are some images of our editing that went well

    Flashback

                                                            Present day
Quick cuts to go along with the fast instrumental part of the song

Just some images of editing the video

One of the main problems we had was when it come to editing we found out we didn't film enough good footage for the video, we overcome this by reacting a few clips in the video and shortning the song a bit and even though the video looks good and we are happy with it we have defiantly learnt that next time we need to film more footage. Another problem we had was when we tried to upload the video to youtube or extract from final cut it would come out with the wrong clip in one of the sections in the video that wasn't there in the editing software, in the end we had to screen record this certain clip and add into to a different sequence to final cut pro then add it into the final project. We had a couple of issues which were out of our control one was when we were filming in the woods sometimes the public walked by which ruined the shot so we had to start over, another problem out of our control was the camera, due to a overload of requests at the college to get a camera there was not enough camera we where lucky enough to get one due to a cancelation. The camera was good but the quality wasn't what we hoped it would be, next time we will book the equipment we need earlier.

In conclusion i thought the final product turned out better than i thought it would be, we all worked well as a group and all our ideas put together made a good video. If we had to do this project again i would defiantly film more footage as it will be easier when it come to the editing and make sure the equipment is booked earlier. If i don't do this the editing will be made harder and the quality will be less as it should be

Little Lion man - Storyboard

This is our story board for our music video for Little Lion man, We have drawn the key shot for the scenes and put some information under the image.

Video presentation editing

un chien andalou - shows eye then cuts to the razor going through the eye, this is eisenstien theory of montage it is rhythmic montage because the next shot you see of the eye we automatically presume it is the eye we saw in the pervious shot, the whole film is shot very slowly even the eye scene.

The texas Chainsaw Massacre - There is a scene where leather face chainsaws a man who is in a wheelchair, again this uses rhythmic montage as you see a shot of the guy in the wheelchair then it cuts to a shot of behind leather face as he waves his chainsaw but we automatically think he is actually killing the men due to the editing of the clips, this is faster edited than Un chien andalou but still is slow compare to the things we see today.

Treatment for music video

Treatment for the Little Lion Man Music video

Storyline

The Storyline for our music video for the song Little Lion man is about a boy who is shown riding his bike towards the woods, as he reaches the woods he gets of his bike and walks into the woods. While this is happening in the music video it will show flashbacks of the boys past, where his relationship is destroyed by his gambling and alcohol addiction. Our music video will also show the boy being abusive towards his girlfriend. It will then go back to the woods scene and show the boy regretting his choices he has made in his past, the climatic last few seconds of the video will show that the boy has taken his own life. This will be shown from the boys dangling legs implying he has hung himself.

Outline of script

Our script for the Little Lion Man music video will only cover about one and a half pages and it won't contain any dialogue. The reason that this is such a short script is because for a music video we do not need any dialogue as the song covers the sound aspect. Therefore this gets rid of a lot of script pages. So all our script will include is the stage direction as to whether we will be filming inside or outside as well as the location and what time of day-. The script will also include 'CUT TO:'s in which it will indicate to us where we will cut the recording.

Size and content

The video will run for approximately 3 minutes as this is how long the song lasts for and this is the pace we would like our music video to go at. The working title for the video is Little Lion Man and will only feature two actors throughout the video. However in various continuity shots a third actor may be required for a cameo role. There are three of us in the production group so we can all take an acting role if necessary.

Estimated cost of production

The cost of our production will be nil as we are using a camera from college and the props we are using will be our own, also the actors are friends or ourselves so therefore there is no need to pay anyone. Because this is a student project an expectation for money to be involved is not present therefore we will purely focus on the visuals and our creative ideas to make the video as best as possible. Travel costs will also not be necessary either because we will walk to both locations as they are nearby to where we live.

Contingency plan

When we start filming various problems could occur throughout the day which could cause us to stop filming altogether and could put pressure on the project. Something which could happen is that it could rain and this is a problem for filming outside because in the outside scenes it needs to be sunny so to set up our mise-en-scene successfully. As well as that it could also damage our equipment, therefore if it does rain we will postpone the outdoor scene and we will film all the indoor scenes. Another problem which could occur throughout the day is that the camera could run out of battery or we could run out of space on the tape which we will record in. So to make sure the camera does not run out of battery we will bring three batteries so we have enough power. We will also pack an extra tape so that if we run out of room on the tape we will have another we can with an extra amount of memory.

Talent

Our music video will not use any main acting talent, instead we will use either friends to act in it or if that is not accessible we will act in it ourselves.  The music video is going to have two separate looks. Part of the music video will be in the present day and we will have a sort of grainy look so to show the breakdown of the boys life and the second part of the music video will be in the form of flashbacks as to what the boy has done for his life to go so bad. This will look a bit lighter and it will be blurrier so to imply that these are flashbacks.
