Auteur Theory Presentation

This is a link to my powerpoint about the Auteur Theory

The Auteur Theory started in France in the late 1940s. The theory states that the director the main creative force in the making of a motion picture. In other words the director is the equilvent to an author when making a film. A director that is considered an Auteur has specific themes/actors/camera shots that make their films their own and recognisable to that director. Tarantino is considered one of the most well known directors related to the theory.

Tarantino has a cameo in every movie he makes. This is something that famous director Alfred Hitcock is also known for. All his Cameos are short lived and only small parts in the film but this shows how much he enjoys film making, also during his earlier films is raised his profile as a director also playing homage to famous directors in the past that have done the same thing

Using the same actors is something Tarantino often does. Uma thurman and himself have a very close friendship and he often uses her in his films. She played the part of Mia Wallace in pulp fiction then he used her again as the bride in both the Kill Bill films. But she isn't the only actor he likes to reuses  for roles in his movies, Christoph Waltz is also an actor he has used in his movies including Django Unchained and Inglorious Basterds.

Taratinos narratives are also something unique to the way he produces his films. Normal Tarantino  films don't follow are usual Narrative structure you would aspect. For example Reservoir Dogs is based around a heist but you never actually see the heist in the film. Pulp fiction stars with the end of the film and the rest of the film is all in non linear order and Kill Bill is set around flashbacks. This makes Taratinos films stand out because the Narrative Structure is never the same

Over the top violence is another thing that occurs in most Tarantino films. The over the top violence usual has a comical effect to it for example the scene in the pulp fiction where Vincent shoots a man in the had accidentally in his car. Because it was unexpected and the comical dialogue after the shooting makes the whole scene seems surreal. Saying this there is times where Tarantino uses violence to make the audience feel uneasy for example the torture scene in the basement in Pulp Fiction. Other over the top violent scenes is the battle in Kill Bill and the shoot out in Django Unchained.

Brand names are something that makes Tarantino films all part of the same universe and recognisable. For example Red apple Cigarets are used in a lot of Taratinos films including Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. Also G.O Juice and Big Kauna Burger are also 2 food and drink companies that appear all over the place in Taratinos work.

Another thing that appears in every single film by Tarantino is pop culture references. This goes from characters talking about their favourite films to actually name calling from real movie Characters. The most notable of these is the Pulp fiction scene in the dinner. Where the waitresses and Waiters are named after famous singers.

Types of shots are also something that can be clearly linked to Tarantino. Most notable his Trunk shots and Corpse Shots. In nearly every film by Tarantino there is a shot from the perspective of the trunk with characters looking in. Also there are a lot of shoots from the POV of a corpse with either a Character on top of them beating them up or people looking down on them.
