FMP Idea development

This is my mind map i have drawn out with ideas for my FMP. I have branches coming out of each idea explaining what is involved in the making of the video if i pick this idea, and some pros and cons of each video.

SWOT Analysis

My first idea for my Final major project is a music video for the song Time of your life by Green Day. The idea for the video is to have the actor with his guitar in different locations playing and singing the song. The official video for the song had the singer with his guitar singing the song so I'm taking the original idea and expanding on it to make it my own. I think with a acoustic song like this you have to show the person playing it. If you have a slow song with a narrative video and not showing and performance the audience get board and switch off from what the video is trying to show. If you show a peformance video for a song like this the audience feel the emotion of the song more.

My second idea is a video for the song Clairvoyant by The story so far. Again like this first one it is a emotional break up song. But for this music video i want to do a narrative story to the video instead of performance. I want to follow the lyrics in the song and do a video surrounding a break up. But i want to follow the couple through the good times in their relationship eventually ending in the events that ended it.

My 3rd idea is for the song outro by M83. This song has only a few lines of lyrics in so i can't really follow a narrative based on the lyrics. So my idea for the video was to show a boy who has lived in a apocalypse for about year. The video will show how the boy has adapted to life with no other humans around him.

Finally idea
Through careful consideration and looking at my SWOT analyses and mind maps i have finally chosen to do 2 Music video for my final project. I will be doing the songs Clairvoyant and Time of your life. I think these 2 videos will let me try out new things i haven't try before. For the video for Time of your life i will be doing a performance video. The actor in the video will be shown in various location playing the song and also showing the effects on the break up on him. This will let me dry out a new editing style i have never tried before, Syncing up the miming to the actually song. The video for Clairvoyant will be using 2 cast members and showing them through different stages of their relationship eventually ending in the break up. I am using people that are currently doing acting courses and also i don't really know well. This will introduce me to getting to know peoples acting styles and working with people i have never worked with before which is a vital skill in the film industry.

Research
For the start of my research i wanted to know peoples views on my idea for the videos and to get some idea on what people wanted to see. I create a survey and posted it on my social media sites to see what the results would be.
My first questions was to ask how old there person was. From this question i can see the majority of my audience would be 18-25 year olds. This will help when deciding what should be see in my video. A lot of young adults now are all using social media and technology. From this idea i could use the idea of social media some how getting involved in the break up story of the video.

The next question i asked was are they male or female, as you can see by the results 80% are male. From these results it has given me the idea of maybe showing the break up through the mans perspective and how he feels about it. That way the video can be more relatable to the majority of the audience.

Th nest question i asked was for a song about a break up would they rather see the narrative of the story follow the meaning of the lyrics or would they rather see a different type of narrative. From my survey i can tell that people in my target audience still want to see music videos about a break up and that it has been over done. This shows my idea is still relevant to theses people.

The last question i asked on the survey was, For a emotional video would you rather see dark colours used or light colours. From the answers on my survey it lets me know that most people want to see dark colours used in the video. This has told me when i come to post production
i will make the video darker using colour correction tools.

To also see if my idea for the video is still something people want to see i looked up recently released emotional break up songs on youtube and see the reception they had received.

One of the songs i looked at was the song Amnesia by the band 5 Seconds Of Summer. This is a song which was released around 9 months ago and surrounds the story of a break up. As you can see the video has got over 20 million views and over 300 thousand likes on the page. This shows that this style of music video is still very popular among teenagers and young adult showing that there is still a audience out there that would want to watch my music video.

To make sure my video does break any ethnical issues i will make sure both the male and female in the video are represented as equal and as strong individuals. I will also get all the cast involved to sign actors contractors  as to not brake and legal issues

Portfolio

Portfolios are used to show off your work and get it seen by people in business. It is a neat folder of all your work in one place which is easily viewable by the audience. I am going to look at three online portfolios and say what i think the strengths and weaknesses are and then choose a finally one that suits the type of portfolio for my work.

http://dougyuan.crevado.com

This is the first portfolio i looked at from a man called Doug Yaun, his portfolio is up on a site called Crevado. His front page of his portfolio is all his videos including a showreel which is free to click on to watch. I think this was a good idea to put all the videos on the first page so as soon as someone gets on the site all his work is there right in front of them. Once you click on the video it will load up on the same page in fullscreen and is ready for you to watch, this is a extremely simple and fast way for people to watch his work without taking them to another website. The colour of the background is grey with the only light colours are from the thumbnails from the videos. I think personally this is a bad choice of colour for the background as it dosnt make anything stand out on the page and it looks a bit dull. On the top right there are different sections you can click on to take you to different parts of his portfolio, including, the about page and his CV. It is very simple and the text of the words are in white which stands out against the grey, but the text is very small and difficult to read if your not sitting right near the screen. This is one of the weaknesses of his portfolio. If the text was a little better this would be a great advantage so people can clearly so what bits of information they can look at on the portfolio.

http://www.bigpebbles.co.uk/portfolio/film_portfolio.php#

The next portfolio i looked at is big pebbles production. The first thing that stands out on the page is the companies name at the top of the screen. It is in front of a white background with black and blue font. This really makes the title stand and the shadow effect that is on the text makes it 3D getting the name attention as soon as you go onto the website. The website is extremely easy to navigate around with tabs to click on just under the title. Again these are in black font, it looks a bit basic but this isn't necessarily a bad thing as it makes it very easy on the eye to read and people know what exactly is featured on the website and where to find certain information. When i first looked through the list of videos on the website i wasn't entirely sure what sort of videos they actually make. This is a bad side to the website as they haven't clearly labels and explained what to of company they are. When you go onto the page where their videos are located, it is quick and easy to watch any video on the website. You click on the title of the video and it loads up and vimeo video on the side. once again it dosnt take you to a different website and the videos are lade out very clearly with a long synopsis explaning what each of the videos are about.

http://www.brendanbarnes.com

The last portfolio i looked at is for a Cinematographer called Brendan Barens. The first thing i notice about his portfolio website is that it is very dull looking. There is much colour contrast compared to the other websites i have looked at.

If i had to pick a website based on the ones i have looked at to put my own portfolio on. I would choose the first one on Crevado. I would choose this one as it is the one i personally think is the most professional looking and is well laid out. I like the way the videos are layed out on the page and the portfolio looks very organised on the website. The website is very simple to navigate around so it won't confused the audience when trying to find different parts of the portfolio. Also its quick and easy to watch a video once you have clicked on it and it doesn't take you to a different site.

I will be posting nearly all my work on the website so it shows how i have progressed in my skills and gives a good insight to my work. I think the first video that will be listed is my showreel, i chose to put this first as i think this is the main video people are interested in watching, this shows a few clips from all my projects i have worked on and the best bits of my filming. From then i will post eac video in its entirety  from the clips from the showreel. This will include my 10 minuite single camera dram, my music video, corporate video and advert. I think my including a variety of different projects will show that i can work to any brief including doing my own pre production, production and post production for one of my own films to working with a live client on the corporate video and making exactly what they want for their company. I will lay the videos out like the way they did on crevado. With 3 boxes in a row going down with a square box thumbnail. I think this looked really smart and professional and shows that i want my work to look the best it can.

Ident pre production

The ident i will be making will be a horror themed ident for a self named company called Screaming House Productions. My ident will having a running time of 10 seconds and will be made on after effects. The target audience for my ident will be for 16-25 year olds, i think this is the main audience for horror films as 16 to 18 is the age you can legally go and see horror films in the cinema depending on the age certificate. My ident will appeal to them due to the nature and theme of the ident. My idea is to start out with the text coming in through shatter effect with tense music building up in the background. My idea for the shattering effect is to catch the eye of the audience while at the same time keeping the background and darker colour to fit in with the dark tone of horror movies. one the title are in the centre of the screen i will have creepy images fade in with a jump sound effect in the background, i will also have the font looking like dripping blood which will stand out against the dark background. At the end of my ident it will cut to black while still hearing the sound effect of a creepy laughter cutting out, i think this would be a good choice for the ending as it will leave the dark feeling with the audience before the film begins, Also i think my whole ident sells the idea that my production company is mainly horror films and is recognisable.

This is my mind map of ideas. This is a good way to get all my notes down and deice which idea is the best on to go for. I have two choices in mind. One is a horror ident with a dark feel to it to appeal to fans of the horror genre. My second idea was to create a ident for trenchers e.g. E4.

This is my first mock up of what one of my ideas might look like. I've decided to put the text right in the centre of the screen so the name stands out to the audience. My idea for the name of the production was Scream house productions. The initially striked me as a horror sounding company and i checked that it wasn't currently in use by another production company. The titles will have blood dripping down from them to set the tone for the type of productions the company makes. Around the side of the titles i will have some images that are well known with the horror genre including a knife, a mask, and chainsaw etc.. I will also have a dark background to make the images and the text stands out.
My second idea for a ident is to use live footage as well as effects to create a teen friendly ident which appeals to mainly 13-17 year olds. I will use a live clip of college and have the titles fly in from the side of the screen. I think the use of the green colouring makes the title stand out against the big picture of the college.

This is my story board, explaining each step and what is happening

The final idea i choose was to do the horror ident. i will be creating all of it with motion graphics using no live footage. I will be using after effects to create the majority of the ident while using final cut towards the end to cut the best bits together. My idea is to start with a very dark background we then see my text fly in using the shattering effects. Tense music will start to build in the background the text will centre in the middle and a glitchy effect will make the text shake. Horror themed pictures will fade in round the edge of the text while creepy sound effects play over including a creepy laugh and the sound of a chainsaw. The screen will then cut to black while still hearing the laugh effect.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Censorship

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - love it or hate it no one can deny its success and the cult following it made. Released in 1974 and directed by Tobe Hooper, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one film that every horror fan knows just about everything there is to know about the film. Spawning countless sequels and remakes the legacy that the original has is huge and it is still rated as "one of the best horror films in cinema history". Shot in the 70s in Texas this low budget film was shot on a very rushed schedule, shooting several hours over time in order to get the film finished in time Hooper really believed this could be his big break, and sure it was. With countless positive reviews and a massive fan reception The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was not shy of controversy.

What Tobe Hooper did so great in this film was the power of suggestion. People believed they saw more blood and gore than they actual did. In fact they saw hardly any at all. Not once in the film do you physically see any violent behaviour towards a character. But this didn't stop the censors. The BBFC looked at the film in 1975 and felt that the terrorisation level in the film was to high to even give the film a X rating. With this in the mind, the editors made a few minor cuts to the final few scenes in the movie and submitted it again. Once again the BBFC declined the film a rating claiming that it would unluckily get through local councils, who can overthrow any BBFC rating. They also claimed that the film relied on its effect of madness and threat and that even though there is no physical gore in the film, there were not really any cuts that could be made that could cut down the threat to make it acceptable for a X approval. There wasn't really much that the film makers could do to get the film a rating in the UK. But this was back in the day where home video releases didn't legally need a certificate to be released. The successes of the home video release only lasted 4 years when in 1984 the Video Recording Act was introduced and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was took of the shelfs. The BBFC where once again asked to look at the film in 1999, they felt now that people would find the film dated and less likely to disturb adult viewers. They were actually impressed rather than disturbed and unlike most controversy movies around that time The Texas Chainsaw Massacre did not include any sexual violence. The BBFC finally gave the film a 18 rating for both the cinema release and the home video release both uncut.

The UK wasn't the only country in which the film had trouble getting released. The film was banned in nearly every country it went for release for including Australia, the film was outright banned in the country for 'excessive violence'. Unlike the UK who recognised the film never actually showed any real gore but the films terrorisation level was to much, Australia did not notice this and outright banned it for its violence. This lasted for several years when until in 1984 they rated the film R fit for release.

So why do we have censorship? Maybe one reason for it is because of the Effects Model. Shorten down meaning people will copy what they see. There are plenty of arguments for and against this theory. Albert Bandura conducted a experiment, he created and film showing a bobo doll getting attacked. He then went and showed this to a group of little children, who where then left in a room with the bobo doll. Nearly all of the children copied what they saw in the video and attacked the doll. But does this prove anything? first of all a bobo doll is like a punching bag, don't we all hit a punching bag if we go past one? Other arguments for the effects model are copy cat crimes, most notable the clock work orange crimes. Once the film had been released criminal gangs in London started dressing as the characters from the film and acting out various crimes which were shown in the film, but still does the back up the theory. For me the line in Scream answers this perfectly, 'movies don't create psychos. Movies make psychos more creative. Just because they may of emulate a certain style of crime copied from something they have seen who's to say they weren't going to do it anyway. Nearly everyone has seen a violent film or played a violent video game, but the majority of people do not go and copy these acts, because most of them have a brain and know its fiction.

The question we come to is should we have censorship? Well yes we should but no to the extent we have it now. Obviously I think we should have age certificates purely for the fact to protect children from harmful material. Not because I think they are going to copy it but because as a suitable adult you shouldn't let your kids be exposed to material that could disturb or harm them. But should we outright ban things if they are seen as too extreme ? Of course we shouldn't, adults who are over the age of 18 should have the right to make their own decisions on what they watch and unless a film is outright breaking the law by being made or being released then it shouldn't be banned regardless of the content.

So remember - Movies don't make psychos, movies just make psychos more creative, come on censors get a grip, its only entertainment at the end of the day.

Proposal - Tennis corporate video

Matthew Flower, Samuel Goodfellow, Karenza Wheatley
Company Name - KMS Productions
Working title for project - Billericay Lawn Tennis Club corporate video
Intended Audience - Potential new members
Contact - Colin Clay

We wish to make a corporate video for Billericay lawn tennis club. We will speak with the heads of the tennis club and find out exactly what they want from us and what they want for the video which will feature on their website. We want to make the club look like a very nice place to play tennis and also show the sociable side where children can make friends and have fun in a safe environment. We hope to film parts of tennis coaching lesson that take part at the club and show a wide range of different abilities and ages in the video to show the club is for everyone, any age and any ability. We also want to shoot the Air dome that has recently been put up over 3 of the tennis courts, this allows for lessons and play to continue all year round with out worry from the cold winter weather. We hope to make a video to the best of our standard and my the club shine against other local tennis clubs in the area.
