The story so far - Proposal/Treatment

Matthew Flower
Company Name = MDF Productions
Working title = The Story so far
Intended audience = 14-25
Contact = South essex college

I am going to produce a music video for the song Clairvoyant by The story so far. I wish this to be a narrative video which will follow the lyrics of the song. The song is about a break up of a relationship so in the video I want it to start by showing the couple during the good stage of their relationship and eventually going downhill and then to the break up. There is only 2 cast members who have already agreed to be in this, they are Joe Brinkmen and Sophie Lambert

Having watched various music videos, I will be basing mine around a similar idea to Wake me up when September ends by Green Day. The video includes a narrative about a couple who struggle to keep their relationship together. This works well for this tempo of song as it is more slow compared to some of the others. I am aiming on filming a variety of shots including close ups, long shots and pull focus this will enable my video to look visually pleasing. The shooting will take place at Priory Park in Southend.

My intended target audience is 16-24 year olds, this is because this genre of music is aimed at this age group, however, at times there may be older or younger people that can also appreciate this. Due to the main target market the main actors in the video will be 18, so that the audience can relate to it.

I will be shooting on the 15/5/15 at 11.00AM I will only be using phones as props in this video which the actors will be bringing their own to use

Time of your life - Proposal

Matthew Flower
Company Name = MDF Productions
Working title = Time of your life
Intended audience = 14-25
Contact = South essex college

I am going to produce a music video for the song Time of your life by Green Day. The video will be   performance based with the actor located in the woods with his guitar. The video will have clips of the boy singing the song in various parts of the woods and fields. The performance based video will be more relatable to the audience as they will be able to connect with the singer. The video requires one cast member which has already been arranged and a contract agreed.

Having watched various music videos, I will be basing mine around a similar idea to A part of me by Neck deep - this video includes the singer in a field singing the song, which works well for this genre of music.

My intended target audience is 16-24 year olds, this is because this genre of music is aimed at this age group, however, at times there may be older or younger people that can also appreciate this. Due to the main target market the main actor in the video will be 18, so that the audience can relate to it.

I will be shooting on the 12/5/15 at 9.00AM, The props I will be taking are the guitar and my iPod. I will bring the iPod along so I can play the song whilst shooting, so my actor can stay in sync and time with the song.

The actor I have chosen is Jack Hornett, who plays the guitar and is familiar with this music, I will be gathering many close ups of the guitar and him singing, these will be used as cutaways to keep the audience more interested.

Final ident

This is the tutorial i watched for the shattering effect on my ident. After i watched the video and made my shattering effects i found copy right free pictures and put them in over the layer. I then exported the clip and put into final cut where i added copyright free sound effects.

FMP Idea development

This is my mind map i have drawn out with ideas for my FMP. I have branches coming out of each idea explaining what is involved in the making of the video if i pick this idea, and some pros and cons of each video.

SWOT Analysis

My first idea for my Final major project is a music video for the song Time of your life by Green Day. The idea for the video is to have the actor with his guitar in different locations playing and singing the song. The official video for the song had the singer with his guitar singing the song so I'm taking the original idea and expanding on it to make it my own. I think with a acoustic song like this you have to show the person playing it. If you have a slow song with a narrative video and not showing and performance the audience get board and switch off from what the video is trying to show. If you show a peformance video for a song like this the audience feel the emotion of the song more.

My second idea is a video for the song Clairvoyant by The story so far. Again like this first one it is a emotional break up song. But for this music video i want to do a narrative story to the video instead of performance. I want to follow the lyrics in the song and do a video surrounding a break up. But i want to follow the couple through the good times in their relationship eventually ending in the events that ended it.

My 3rd idea is for the song outro by M83. This song has only a few lines of lyrics in so i can't really follow a narrative based on the lyrics. So my idea for the video was to show a boy who has lived in a apocalypse for about year. The video will show how the boy has adapted to life with no other humans around him.

Finally idea
Through careful consideration and looking at my SWOT analyses and mind maps i have finally chosen to do 2 Music video for my final project. I will be doing the songs Clairvoyant and Time of your life. I think these 2 videos will let me try out new things i haven't try before. For the video for Time of your life i will be doing a performance video. The actor in the video will be shown in various location playing the song and also showing the effects on the break up on him. This will let me dry out a new editing style i have never tried before, Syncing up the miming to the actually song. The video for Clairvoyant will be using 2 cast members and showing them through different stages of their relationship eventually ending in the break up. I am using people that are currently doing acting courses and also i don't really know well. This will introduce me to getting to know peoples acting styles and working with people i have never worked with before which is a vital skill in the film industry.

Research
For the start of my research i wanted to know peoples views on my idea for the videos and to get some idea on what people wanted to see. I create a survey and posted it on my social media sites to see what the results would be.
My first questions was to ask how old there person was. From this question i can see the majority of my audience would be 18-25 year olds. This will help when deciding what should be see in my video. A lot of young adults now are all using social media and technology. From this idea i could use the idea of social media some how getting involved in the break up story of the video.

The next question i asked was are they male or female, as you can see by the results 80% are male. From these results it has given me the idea of maybe showing the break up through the mans perspective and how he feels about it. That way the video can be more relatable to the majority of the audience.

Th nest question i asked was for a song about a break up would they rather see the narrative of the story follow the meaning of the lyrics or would they rather see a different type of narrative. From my survey i can tell that people in my target audience still want to see music videos about a break up and that it has been over done. This shows my idea is still relevant to theses people.

The last question i asked on the survey was, For a emotional video would you rather see dark colours used or light colours. From the answers on my survey it lets me know that most people want to see dark colours used in the video. This has told me when i come to post production
i will make the video darker using colour correction tools.

To also see if my idea for the video is still something people want to see i looked up recently released emotional break up songs on youtube and see the reception they had received.

One of the songs i looked at was the song Amnesia by the band 5 Seconds Of Summer. This is a song which was released around 9 months ago and surrounds the story of a break up. As you can see the video has got over 20 million views and over 300 thousand likes on the page. This shows that this style of music video is still very popular among teenagers and young adult showing that there is still a audience out there that would want to watch my music video.

To make sure my video does break any ethnical issues i will make sure both the male and female in the video are represented as equal and as strong individuals. I will also get all the cast involved to sign actors contractors  as to not brake and legal issues

Portfolio

Portfolios are used to show off your work and get it seen by people in business. It is a neat folder of all your work in one place which is easily viewable by the audience. I am going to look at three online portfolios and say what i think the strengths and weaknesses are and then choose a finally one that suits the type of portfolio for my work.

http://dougyuan.crevado.com

This is the first portfolio i looked at from a man called Doug Yaun, his portfolio is up on a site called Crevado. His front page of his portfolio is all his videos including a showreel which is free to click on to watch. I think this was a good idea to put all the videos on the first page so as soon as someone gets on the site all his work is there right in front of them. Once you click on the video it will load up on the same page in fullscreen and is ready for you to watch, this is a extremely simple and fast way for people to watch his work without taking them to another website. The colour of the background is grey with the only light colours are from the thumbnails from the videos. I think personally this is a bad choice of colour for the background as it dosnt make anything stand out on the page and it looks a bit dull. On the top right there are different sections you can click on to take you to different parts of his portfolio, including, the about page and his CV. It is very simple and the text of the words are in white which stands out against the grey, but the text is very small and difficult to read if your not sitting right near the screen. This is one of the weaknesses of his portfolio. If the text was a little better this would be a great advantage so people can clearly so what bits of information they can look at on the portfolio.

http://www.bigpebbles.co.uk/portfolio/film_portfolio.php#

The next portfolio i looked at is big pebbles production. The first thing that stands out on the page is the companies name at the top of the screen. It is in front of a white background with black and blue font. This really makes the title stand and the shadow effect that is on the text makes it 3D getting the name attention as soon as you go onto the website. The website is extremely easy to navigate around with tabs to click on just under the title. Again these are in black font, it looks a bit basic but this isn't necessarily a bad thing as it makes it very easy on the eye to read and people know what exactly is featured on the website and where to find certain information. When i first looked through the list of videos on the website i wasn't entirely sure what sort of videos they actually make. This is a bad side to the website as they haven't clearly labels and explained what to of company they are. When you go onto the page where their videos are located, it is quick and easy to watch any video on the website. You click on the title of the video and it loads up and vimeo video on the side. once again it dosnt take you to a different website and the videos are lade out very clearly with a long synopsis explaning what each of the videos are about.

http://www.brendanbarnes.com

The last portfolio i looked at is for a Cinematographer called Brendan Barens. The first thing i notice about his portfolio website is that it is very dull looking. There is much colour contrast compared to the other websites i have looked at.

If i had to pick a website based on the ones i have looked at to put my own portfolio on. I would choose the first one on Crevado. I would choose this one as it is the one i personally think is the most professional looking and is well laid out. I like the way the videos are layed out on the page and the portfolio looks very organised on the website. The website is very simple to navigate around so it won't confused the audience when trying to find different parts of the portfolio. Also its quick and easy to watch a video once you have clicked on it and it doesn't take you to a different site.

I will be posting nearly all my work on the website so it shows how i have progressed in my skills and gives a good insight to my work. I think the first video that will be listed is my showreel, i chose to put this first as i think this is the main video people are interested in watching, this shows a few clips from all my projects i have worked on and the best bits of my filming. From then i will post eac video in its entirety  from the clips from the showreel. This will include my 10 minuite single camera dram, my music video, corporate video and advert. I think my including a variety of different projects will show that i can work to any brief including doing my own pre production, production and post production for one of my own films to working with a live client on the corporate video and making exactly what they want for their company. I will lay the videos out like the way they did on crevado. With 3 boxes in a row going down with a square box thumbnail. I think this looked really smart and professional and shows that i want my work to look the best it can.
